…because I’ve seen it three times now.
Oh, what a day! WHAT A LOVELY DAY!
Weird, bizarre, but a hell of a lot of fun, it was.
I admit to cackling when I read an article somewhere on the internet about how almost every character had a name that could double as a name for a heavy metal band.
Got tickets to see it on Wednesday!
So good! Fantastic design, characters, everything was over the top but somehow just right.
It’s definitely the best Mad Max movie. … Which isn’t saying much, because I went back and re-watched all three Mad Max films and they’re really not very good.
It’s a fun movie, to be sure, but bring earplugs. Because boom, loud engine noise, explosion, gunfire, random-metal-guitar-jamming-from-that-guy-who’s-strapped-to-a-giant-amp-car-thing.

I will not hear any negativity about THE DOOF WARRIOR.

Apparently, they had to build a working flamethrower guitar and terrifying amp car. It wasn’t just CGI or a still prop or faked.
The only CG in the movie was when the Doof Warrior’s guitar swung toward the camera during the epic crash, along with the spinning steering wheel that came flying at the camera.
Everything else was practical effects.
That’s awesome and it needs to be tomorrow already.
FUCKING
AWESOME
GO SEE IT IF YOU HAVEN’T

YES!!!
The word I’d use would be REFRESHING. None of that quippy, knowy Marvel action stuff. Practical effects, so your brain buys into what’s happening. Throwback-ish in the right places (like the villain), progressive in others (namely, the hero, Furiosa). You could almost lump it together with Birdman in the sense that they are refuting the modern blockbuster. But Birdman dives up the modern blockbuster’s ass; Mad Max sideswipes it and leaves it choking dust.
But now: Will Jurassic World rekindle our collective childhood wonder at man’s hubristic attempt to build animal-themed parks? I really hope so, but these previews are worrying.
I’m less hopeful for Jurassic World. It has all the makings of something annoying:
- The new hotness (guy who headlined Guardians of the Galaxy) in a central role
- Quips that quip so much quippiness that they never stop quipping
- “It’s like that old movie from your youth, but bigger!”
This seems like it always ends up disappointing. Mad Max didn’t do any of this except MAYBE option three. But… it was George Miller saying, “Let’s do one more ride.” Not the studio saying “hey let’s outdo the old classic with all new actors and a new director!”
Saw a behind-the-scenes thing for Mad Max that was pretty interesting.
There was a bit where Hugh Keays-Byrne (in full character kit) sees a bunch of the War Boys hanging out on one of the rigs (in full kit themselves) and he yells out “You look amazing!” and they all promptly give him the Immortan salute.

That, sir, is amazing.
So a little story about the ending credits of Mad Max!
I think I mentioned that I do a Mad Max cosplay desert event called Wasteland Weekend, and I go dressed as Elvis. There are some people who go and stay in character the whole time, and they love interacting with me because… Elvis!
This one guy dresses up as Scrooloose from Thunderdome, and true to character doesn’t speak. Every time he encountered me he would touch the shiny objects on my costume and pantomime this child-like interest. I’d smile and just play back a little “oh what are you doing!” sort of deal.
One of his dreams was to go to the Mad Max museum in Australia. Last year he was able to finally do it–however sadly while out there he was in a motorcycle accident and died. Worse thing was that the accident was with the owner of the mad max museum as he was backing out into the road.
To a surprise to me, at the end of the credits in large letters it says “LANCE MOORE II”. This guy who I’ve never spoken to but was still one of my friends is immortalized in cinema history now. So when you see the movie in the future, that’s who Lance was.
Aw man. That’s sad to hear.
Still, it’s awesome they honored him like that; I bet that woulda made him happy.
Movie was soooo awesome. I immediately wanted to run it as GURPS RPG but I have no time.
I was thinking that, that world would make a sweet-ass tabletop setting.
