For the moment it’s safe. At some point during my period of complete inactivity Dreamhost seems to have stepped up their own automated security game because several files were “scrubbed” without me doing anything.
That’s not to say that Sliver itself is any less vulnerable than she was before, but the exploits used to hack the system were based on PHP/server hacks, not Sliver itself, soooo hopefully it’s more solid now?
Regardless I’m making a backup of this cleaned up version.
I don’t think that this news changes anything about what we’ve talked about going forward, except that it definitely makes archiving a simpler thing to tackle. … But, again, I’m no techie, so I could be reading this wrong.
Well, this means we could restore kupopolis.com to just exist as it used to be if we wanted to. That kind of defeats the need for this ProtoKupop/Archive project–unless we want to archive it all away?
Just so you guys know, probably 99% of Silver is solid code. If anything, Dusty may only need to re-write the 1% that interfaces with the database to something more secure depending on the current server setup (not sure what version of php its running on).

What are your thoughts fellas?
My bad. Admin is me. I had logged in to add the kupopowiki link Tex requested.

I think the discussions we’ve had about restricting general access, by way of a login page/splash screen/landing page, shoudln’t stop just because we’ve gotten the old site back up and running. Concerns we had about people not wanting posts to show up in internet searches are, presumably, still valid… and, if I’m thinking about this right, protecting the entire site’s content with a login requirement will generally make us more secure (unless it won’t… again, out of my depth a little here).
Plus, part of the big appeal to shelving the original site as an archive and starting “fresh” was the idea that we were unburdened by the obligations of old stories we may not have finished. Symbollically, psychologically, sealing it all behind a login screen would help with that. We can carry forward continuing the new endeavor, and still have the old site to refer back to only when we so desire.
I agree with Matt, here. Would putting access to the old boards behind a login screen work?
I love the idea of keeping the original format. I know Sliver has some weird character things, probably because of its age; some titles show up as an insane string of characters and stuff. But reading the old stories in the original site… yes please!
It would be nice to make a login screen which we’d have to input our normal kupop logins before going to the wiki landing page. This is something that could probably easily be added to the existing program.
Also, does anyone’s login work right now? I may have just forgotten my password or something. Also, where is it all living at now? Are you hosting it Dusty?
I think ideally we do this: Dustin gets it to work at kupopolis.com/archive, I can design and build an archive login landing page. Once logged in you are taken to the kupoproper landing page. If you happen to log out (clear your cookie), you are redirected back to the archive login page.
A bit of a minor moot point, but I’d like at least a link in the footer of the login page for who to contact if you get locked out, have any questions, etc.

Poking around now–hey dusty, I see a google analytics code in the silver build. Anyone to pull that info? I’m kinda curious what the graph looks like over the years.
… Spoon. He’s the one in charge. You should definitely sue him.
Damn it.
Also, based off what I saw in the other thread, any system we can get going that requires as little techwork from Dusty as possible would be ideal. I am woefully ignorant on this sort of thing, but I just want to make sure that whatever we use going forward isn’t going to reignite his burden. This may be a completely unfounded concern, but just throwing it out there.
For the wiki or the main board? I found that mine worked, but both were case sensitive, and for some reason I had used the same password for both, but each one with a different capitalization scheme. Cuz that is how I do.
